\"Cat(April 2023) …<\/strong><\/em> Sagrantino continues to be an under-appreciated wine in the Pantheon of Italian icon wines. Tuscany, Piedmont, Veneto – all have a status wine: Brunello, Barolo, Amarone, yet Sagrantino remains buried in a mire of head-scratching and oblivion. It’s a difficult hole to climb out of, but with time, and dedication, Sagrantino and the winemakers that toil with this grape might do it.<\/p>\n

The use of less wood is a good first step: bigger barrels, less wood to juice ratio helps to create a more approachable wine, sooner. The tannins of Sagrantino have always been its selling feature and its downfall – not everyone wants to wait 30 years for a wine to be drinkable, we don’t all have that kind of time.<\/p>\n

Within the two categories of wines tasted (older vintage – current \/ coming vintage), the ratio of wine’s scored to wines left behind was very high 83% and 79% respectively – granted, the second number is for the 2019s which, in truth, they still have time on their side. But the first number are wines from 2014 – 2018 and it shows they are wines drinking well now, as well as their future possibility.<\/p>\n

What needs to be said is that Sagrantino is poised to make a statement … The opening act (Rosso) has taken the stage and will soon give way to the star of the show (Montefalco Sagrantino) – let’s just hope it doesn’t take too long for the star to speak up.<\/p>\n

Below is a list of the Sagrantino wine’s tried, broken down into two. List two, are the “older” vintages, list one are the new 2019 Vintage wines. There’s an amazing array of skill and intrigue on both lists. Put your hands on a bottle when you can. These wines are well worth the time and effort, especially the more modern versions, which when given 5 years (not the usual 20 to 30) will be gems … Still ageable, but much more approachable and earlier.<\/p>\n
